Cradle to Cradle certification for Daas Baksteen
Renowned Quality Brick Manufacturer Daas Baksteen has become one of first producers of Clay building materials in the Netherlands to receives the Cradle to Cradle Certification.
This certificate, issued by the EPEA, underlines the pioneering role of Daas Baksteen in the construction materials industry when it comes to sustainability. Daas Baksteen has been producing Bricks since 1890 from three locations, producing a large variety of brick types including the patented ClickBrick system. The only Clay Brick that can be completely re-used after its initial use.
Cradle to Cradle certification
After years of research and development the reward has come: Daas Baksteen receives the cradle to cradle Certification of the Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency (EPEA) , the research institute of Michael Braungart and William McDonough, the founders of the Cradle to Cradle philosophy. This certificate is only awarded to products that de-grade naturally or can be constantly recycled in the industrial process. Daas Baksteen is the first manufacturer of Clay Facing Brick products to be awarded with the Certification.
To be awarded with the certificate, the organization is assessed on various aspects, with the EPEA criteria being more stringent than most environmental laws.
1. Material, material purity (composition raw materials) and information of Product custody chains and suppliers accreditation.
2. Recycling Potential: The degree to which products can be recycled indefinitely.
(Up cycling instead of down cycling, eventually to waste)
3. Energy: the degree of use of renewable energy.
4. Water Management: the extent to which water is managed in an ecological way and re-used by means of water treatment and closed water circuits.
5. Working Conditions: the degree to which Daas Baksteen, and its suppliers in the entire chain of raw materials, operate with good moral ethics and good occupational Health and Safety conditions.
At Daas Baksteen sustainability is not a trend, sustainability is in its very genes. For many years we have anticipated emission restrictions and by focusing on the re-use of raw materials and additives we have produced sustainable reductions in our emission levels as well as making maximum use of our renewable energy. Sustainable production for sustainable products; ClickBrick, a fully re-usable brick and DuecoBrick, a brick that uses over 50% less material in the wall and therefore needs less than 50% of the normal energy and transportation.
In one of Daas Baksteen's old quarries the largest Solar Park in the Netherlands is currently being constructed. Thirty-four thousand solar panels on a nineteen acre site will make a significant contribution towards the green energy ambitions for the production of Bricks in Azewijn.
