The Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Challenge is an international competition where a total of USD 250,000 will be awarded to 3 winners by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. This challenge is organized in partnership with the Nationale Postcode Loterij, the Schmidt Family Foundation and the 'Make It Right' Foundation by Brad Pitt.
The ' challenge ' was designing Cradle to Cradle inspired building products that are safe, healthy, affordable and effective and can also be recycled endlessly after use.
8 finalists are from the United States, 1 is from Lithuania, and 1 finalist is the 'Dutch Design Initiative'. That is an initiative of four students (architecture) of the Fontys Hogeschool in Tilburg: they can win the Grand Prize of 125,000 USD, the second prize of 75,000 USD or third prize 50,000 USD.
The Dutch Design Initiative has, in short, come up with a solution (' building matrix '/building manual) to build very sustainable and affordable houses and buildings in areas where it is most needed. These houses are applicable and suitable in a wide range of climates. Locally available materials can be used. They where inspired by for example the unhealthy living conditions in slums. Their credo is: ' A dime for a house '
