BioFoam® is a polyactic acid (PLA) based foam material that can be used as an alternative to traditional insulation materials.  It has the same characteristics as EPS insulation. EPS is an oil based plastic. BioFoam® is made out of plants. BioFoam® can be completely biodegraded, composted or used for feedstock for recycling.

BioFoam is a foam material for a variety of applications. Applications have included ice box insulation, cavity wall house insulation, surfboards, and organ transport boxes.

Defined materials, ingredients and additives

BioFoam® is produced from the renewable resource PLA.

PLA has a different production process than most other polymers. This polymer is derived from the production of sugar cane, which is being refined to sugar, then fermented to lactic acid, from which lactide is being made. Lactide is finally polymerised to PLA. By using CO2 the raw BioBeads are expanded to EPS-like pearls filled with air (98%).

After use, the BioFoam product can be remoulded into a new product like EPS and it has additional end of life options. As the basic material is a biopolymer made out of plants, it is compostable
