The Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA) Program is an initiative of the Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) of the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development of the Organization of American States (OAS). It is focused on increasing awareness in participating countries, of the relevance and viability of innovative CLCP design and manufacturing methods as means for implementing eco-intelligent and sustainable practices in companies and communities. CLCP is a new design and manufacturing paradigm based on the Cradle-to-Cradle® principles and implies the development of industrial processes in line with Circular Economy principles in which materials utilized become valuable nutrients upon reaching the end of their useful use cycle.
The goal of the CLCPA program is to introduce and showcase the viability and applicability of Closed Looped Cycle Production design and manufacturing methodologies in the production sector of nations in the Americas as an innovative business development tool to mainly improve the productivity, competitiveness and sustainability of businesses.
While the industrial sector account for nearly two-thirds of employment in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), it contributes less than half of total GDP due to low levels of productivity. Many companies rely on inefficient product design and production methods that result in loss of market share, unemployment, and excess waste and pollution.
The CLCPA Program is tailored to the needs and context of the participating countries. Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Trinidad & Tobago are the countries that since 2010 have been benefiting of the technical assistance provided under the CLCPA Program. The CLCPA Program has strategic alliances with partners that contribute to the program development within the participating countries. These partnerships allow contextualizing the program according to the needs of each country and providing the technical assistance for the development of the projects.
Awareness Raising - Increase awareness, knowledge, and collaboration among stakeholders (government, national enterprises, National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPC), Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) or chambers of commerce, etc.) about Closed Looped Cycle Production.
Analysis and Policy Advice - Prepare and present position papers to stakeholders to facilitate high-level policy dialogue on economic and environmental benefits of sustainable design and closed-looped cycle production methods necessary for incentivizing and supporting MSMEs adoption of Closed Loop Cycle Production.
Promote Application - Promote the application or adoption of Closed Looped Cycle Production methods (incl. Cradle-to-cradle, Cleaner Production, Sustainable Materials Management, or similar certifications and methods) by companies, in particular SMEs in participating countries.
